Cant Tell the Difference Between Blue and Purple

| No. I don't see those dark colors very well, like I can't often tell the difference between dark brown, navy blue, dark green, dark purple and black. For some reason I'm good with gray, though. It makes buying suits and nice pants a pain in the ass, as I need to bring someone to help. |

| Intellectually, I treat violet as a range of frequencies, and purple as a mixture of red and blue. Functionally, I treat violet as a pretentious name for a subset of purple. (differentiating blue from purple from pink is one of the areas where my color blindness is most evident, for the record) |

| Strictly speaking, violet is a wavelength range, and purple is a combination of reflected red and blue light. Tetrachromats perceive violet and purple as visually distinct for this reason. That said, I don't differentiate between them in common usage; they look the same to me. |

| i imagine violet as ..pinker? than purple. like, somewhere between pink and purple. which possibly makes no sense because the flower that's called a Violet is usually dark purple. wikipedia completely disagrees with me, it thinks violet is bluer than purple. hmm. and, "violet" is the French word for purple, so i imagine that's a contributing factor in dennil's case! but there's also a word "pourpre", right? which is the royal purple from shells? |

Same here... I think Crayola is to blame. There is a violet (purple) crayon that makes a somewhat reddish purple, but there is also a blue violet that makes a bluer purple, and is probably closer to actual violet. |
the more you know, I guess| I call violet violet if only because I've lived in areas where lots of violets grew, and there's an association there. In some ways, though, I've treated it as just another 'designerized' variant of, you know, purple. I'm not good with all the fancy colors and their names. Earth tones, grays, and blues are good. I'm that guy. Very boring decor and wardrobe. |
| There was a site that took users feedback and graphed colour names, while there was various responses that were outliers I believe there was also a significant male/female difference in the names used. Men were generally more generic and lumped wildly different shades together while women differentiated more. |
| Weird, I was just thinking about this today. My son got some work back from preschool today and one of the pieces was a rainbow he did. The innermost lines were violet and then purple. I was thinking that I never really thought that they were different from one another. |

| Related point of geek angst in my household: rainbows. Specifically, the dumbing down of them. When I (and no doubt you) was a kid rainbows had seven colors because, you know, science. But apparently that's far too complicated for kids today. It seems that, as a matter of course in kids' books and TV shows, noble indigo and vibrant violet have been nixed and replaced with purple. Purple! WTF, people? This an outrage! It's Roy G. Biv for a reason, FFS. Roy G. Bp doesn't even make sense. Bah! |

| I consider myself fortunate when I can differentiate blue from purple. I used to refer to a more reddish hue as violet, and the bluer hue as purple, but that stopped some time ago. |

Wow. Timely weird. This just came up when I mentioned that I needed to repaint my green wall and was corrected by pointing out that there is a little of this and a little of that also. Related: find a toddler who's just learning colors, walk around with them outside on a clear day, point to stuff and get them to say the color, verify that they get what "blue" is, point to the sky and ask them what color that is, watch their little brains do a BSOD.
